The Last Shift

Commissioned by Morris Homes through an initiative by Wigan Council and in partnership with Taylor Wimpey. This sculpture was in response to a commission to install public sculpture on the Gadbury Fold development in Atherton, Wigan. Four figurative and non-figurative proposals were put forward to public consultation, with “The Last Shift” being chosen as the preferred design. It depicts two miners and a deputy, emerging from the shaft for the final time. Sorrowful but with their dignity intact, the last workers ascend in the cage to the pithead before closure.
